Adobe on Tuesday released updates for Reader and Acrobat that plug 17 critical holes, including 1 that being exploited within the wild to take control of computers and 1 that could be utilized to launch an attack utilizing social engineering and PDF files.

Adobe warned about the vulnerability becoming used in attacks, which also affected Flash Player, in early June and plugged the hole in Flash on June 10.

Meanwhile, the PDF vulnerability was made public in late March by security researcher Didier Stevens, who fashioned a proof-of-concept attack that relied on the "/launch" functionality. Another researcher at NitroSecurity took advantage of the same flaw to produce a proof-of-concept attack about a week later.

"We added functionality to block any attempts to launch an executable or other dangerous objects by default," Adobe's Steve Gottwals, wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. "We also altered the way the existing warning dialog works to thwart the known social engineering attacks."

The protection updates are for Adobe Reader 9.3.2 for Windows, Mac, and Unix, Adobe Acrobat 9.3.2 for Windows and Macintosh, and Adobe Reader 8.2.2 and Acrobat 8.2.2 for Windows and Mac, according to the protection bulletin.

These updates will take the location from the quarterly security update that was scheduled for July 13, Adobe mentioned. The next quarterly update is scheduled for October 12.

Meanwhile, Adobe said that when patches are available it will provide immediate updates on its Download Center for the most well-liked languages and operating systems starting July 13.

The company also said its new Updater program, launched in April, seems to be helping customers keep their software up to date better than the old system.

"When we compared the new updater against the older technology, we discovered that our users were a lot more likely to update using the new Adobe Reader Updater," Gottwals wrote. "Our data showed that the user population adopted the last update roughly three times faster than previous updates."

    Command-Tab to minimized windows
We've told you prior to how to restore a minimized window, or open a new one, from OS X's application switcher (which appears whenever you hit Command-Tab). (The short version: Press Command-Tab until the application you want is highlighted. Then, while nevertheless holding down the Command key, press and hold the Option crucial.) However, depending on the application, that trick may not work if an application has much more than two windows minimized. MacOSXHints.com reader tegholm discovered a way around that problem:

Use Command-Tab to cycle towards the desired application and then, while still holding down Command, press the up or down arrow. This will show the application's windows in Expose. Select the preferred window with the arrow keys and press Return to activate it.

This may take a few much more keystrokes than the old shortcut. But if you have much more than 1 minimized window in an application, it's a pretty good substitute that doesn't need the mouse. (Note that third-party utilities for example Witch ( Macworld rated 4.5 out of 5 mice ) provide similar functionality, along with many other improvements over OS X's built-in switcher.)  PC Pro School

Firefox 4 Beta 1 to flaunt new theme with tabs on top
    Source: Source: My Joy Online

We've known for quite some time that Mozilla was preparing a new theme for Firefox 4. On Mozilla Links, the UI team has informed the public that the new theme will finally discover its way into the browser's first beta release. According towards the post, the following changes could be anticipated within the Windows version:

    # The Firefox button - a new menu button that aggregates the most frequently utilized browser menu choices (default for Windows Vista and 7; can be disabled)

    # Aero Glass interface - a brand new skin that fits with the default theme of Windows Vista and 7 (presently only obtainable via third-party plug-ins)

    # Customizable tab bar - ability to drag buttons around the tab bar

    # Bookmarks button - opens bookmarks menu and lets you dock it as a sidebar

    # Tabs on best - now enabled by default and can be changed by user

Concerning tabs on top, many users have been fast to call Mozilla copycats. Opera, too as Google Chrome, have both used tabs on best for quite some time. However, to set the record straight, Mozilla wants to assure the public that it has thought lengthy and difficult about Firefox's tab placement and has posted a video explaining the design choice (see below).

The Mac OS and Linux versions will also see UI overhauls, though Mozilla's post doesn't go into details. Besides the changes listed above, other improvements can be anticipated prior to a last product is launched. App tabs are one of the features to be implemented and will allow users to make sticky tabs with no navigation interface for application-like web sites (for example your email). This is sort of like permatabs.

Firefox 4 Beta 1 is scheduled for release within the coming weeks. Mozilla plans to have the final version from the browser out the door by the end of the year.

Windows 8 leaks show Microsoft's eyes on Apple
Although nevertheless early within the procedure, newly leaked paperwork about Windows 8 provide some keen insight into where Microsoft wants to head with the next version from the operating system.

One thing that's made abundantly clear is that Microsoft continues to be paying attention to Apple. Within the documents, which appear to come from an April meeting with pc makers, Microsoft discusses its Cupertino, California-based rival and outlines strategies to offer a Glass windows Shop similar to the way Apple distributes software program on its iPhone.

The documents, which Microsoft has declined to comment on or authenticate, also talk about strategies to give Windows a much more iPad-like response time via new power management settings.

In specific, one slide titled "How Apple Does It: A Virtuous Cycle," talks concerning the need for simplicity in style. "Apple brand is recognized for high quality, uncomplicated, 'it just functions,'" the slide says, adding that "This is something individuals will pay for!"

Other slides don't directly reference Apple, but talk concerning the need for a number of features popularized by its products, such as the App Shop, as nicely like a much more instant-on feel.

Even though Windows has continued to dominate the Pc marketplace, nevertheless holding roughly 95 percent of global marketplace share, it faces a significant threat from mobile operating systems searching to encroach on the low end from the computer market, such as the iPad and Android-based devices.

Hewlett-Packard, which originally talked about strategies for a Windows 7-based slate Computer in January, now refuses to say whether it will construct that product and has because announced plans to buy Palm in a deal anticipated to close shortly.

Microsoft continues to be working on tablets for nearly a decade and, as early as 2005, outlined the hardware trends that would enable a device like the iPad. Thus far, nevertheless, only Apple has been capable to create a hit with buyers.

Among the goals outlined for Glass windows 8 are some features that would appear to be aimed at making Glass windows more competitive in this market, such as enhanced simplicity, better assistance of touch and gestures, as nicely as assistance for smaller-size screens.

Even though the iPad is not referenced directly, the presentation does refer towards the slate form factor like a "center of gravity," alongside laptops and all-in-ones.

To attain quicker boot-up, Microsoft is searching at a number of points, such as a new combination of logging off and hibernating a machine that would offer a quicker boot-up than a complete restart.

That combination would become the default on-off behavior, although just what to name the setting is nevertheless a question mark, according towards the documents. The organization can also be searching to resume from sleep in less than a second, according to the documents.

"Windows 8 PCs turn on fast, nearly instantly in some instances, and are ready to work without any long or unexpected delays," reads one of dozens of slides posted to enthusiast site Microsoft Kitchen, among other locations.

Obviously, the goal of instant-on PCs is a long held, but as yet unrealized aspiration. Microsoft substantially enhanced its boot-up, resume, and shut-down times with Glass windows 7, but they all pale when compared to the nearly instantaneous response 1 gets from a mobile device for example the iPhone or iPad.

As for the shop, Microsoft apparently plans to let every pc maker brand the store under their personal name. Among the benefits to consumers would be the capability to access individuals applications on any Computer they personal.

It is also outlined as an chance for partners to make cash after the Pc sale, though it is described as "revenue neutral" for Windows, suggesting that possibly Microsoft isn't planning to take a cut of sales.

One slide suggests that, in an earlier forum with hardware makers, Microsoft heard that such a store is seen as needed as soon as feasible, although this really is clearly a tricky undertaking with Microsoft having to balance the needs of software program creators, buyers, partners, resellers, and the Computer makers -- not to mention Microsoft itself.

The slides also offer up a time frame for Web Explorer 9, suggesting a beta of the new browser is anticipated by August. Microsoft has had developer platform previews of IE9, but those have lacked a significant user interface and other functions. The beta, according to the slides, will probably be the "first release of full IE functionality."

Ensure Your Companies Success by Archiving Emails
When it comes to contact between corporations, emails are most favored. Close to 83% of crucial data for a business can be discovered in its email data. Actually, emails are of such significance that they are normally stored for the same period as any written confirmations or other orders. A recent survey released by Gartner Group states, "Email communication accounts for around 97% of all connection of a business. Hence, it is necessary that any business organization actually invest directly in an email archiving system to ensure not only would their email be safeguarded for long term use, but that it would also be preserved in a secure manner."

The principal goal of such an archive system is to extract the subject as well as body of any emails that are sent or received. The system stores all such archives in a read-only file format, thereby guaranteeing no discrepancy in the emails. Another advantage that comes with such email archiving is that it may help conserve space normally necessary for an email on the server, because all archives are placed in a compacted structure.

One of several key factors why companies might have to have such emails to be stored is for future reference. For example, these emails can be used as permissible evidence in the courtroom for any litigation. If instead of an archive, such emails were just located on a backup system, it would cost the organization tremendous manpower and fees when searching through the hundreds of emails. When stored in an archive, such emails are preserved in their genuine structure, limiting the possibility of spoilage or tampering. At the same time, they can also be explored pretty simply.

An email archive may help limit the possibilities of a business being found guilty of fraud or disregard by court as all emails are well stored and kept for future use.
